Introducing the Number 2

Objective: To learn number 2 with the help of a story
Teaching Aid: Make stick puppets of fruits in a pair and a number 2 for the story

Method: Greet the class and create energy by warm up activity. Ask kids to swim in the air by moving their hands. Ask them to sit and stand until the energy is built. Ask the kids if they know what they are going to learn today.

Introduce the number 2.

Show them how it looks like on the board. Curve, Slanting line, Sleeping line
Pronounce the number 2 and ask the kids to repeat. Let them know that it is counting, 2 comes after 1.
Using hand gestures, show them number with 2 fingers.
Ask them to draw the number with fingers in the air.

Today we are going to learn about number two.
Number 2 is very important. Do you know why?
Ask the students to think and answer.
Number 2 is important because we have two eyes, two ears, two hands and two legs. Right!!

Would you like to hear a story of number 2??
Today we have number 2 with us. Show the number 2 puppet stick to the class.

Let us hear a story of Number 2.
One day number 2 was very hungry. He was alone at home and he felt like eating fruit salad.

He went in the kitchen to check if there are enough fruits to make his favorite fruit salad. He opened his refrigerator but he didn’t find any fruits.

So now he thought, let me go to the market and buy some fruits.
Number 2 went to the nearby market. He went first to buy two apples, one and two.
Then number 2 went to buy two bananas, one and two. He then went to buy two pineapples, his favorite, one and two. He then went to buy yummy yummy strawberries, one and two.

And then in the last he went to buy mangoes. How many mangoes did he buy?
Two mangoes, one and two.

He then bought all the fruits he wanted in his fruit basket and went back home happily.
At home, he made yummy and delicious fruit salad. He ate his fruit salad to his heart content. Number 2 is not hungry anymore. His tummy is full and happy too.

Recap: Teacher can do recap by playing a memory game from the story of Number 2.
For example, how many Mangoes did number 2 buy? How many Apples did number 2 buy?

Activity for Number 2

Making number 2 with play doh

Materials required: Play doh made at home, sheet of paper with number 2 traced on it with marker

Method: Show the class how to make number 2 with play doh. Roll the play doh into a long shape, make a curve and stick it on the sheet where number 2 was traced. Stretch the play doh to make it look like number 2. You can also make small balls of the play doh which could be a size of a palm. Then flatten it and stick it on the sheet of paper on number 2.
