Easy Fun Painting Ideas for Kids To Try
Wear your creative hat and check out some easy, fun and interesting painting ideas for kids with simple materials like candle, balloon, string, q-tips that are easily available at home or classroom. You can let the child use his/her own imagination while explaining the techniques before hand. All the materials and methods have been listed out in detailed.
These painting ideas are easy to follow and your child can create beautiful artwork with little help. Do give it a try.
1. Magic Painting Using Crayon or Candle– Eiffel Tower
Materials required: Poster colors, Acrylic colors, white construction paper, and Candle or white crayon
Method: This technique is also called as crayon resistant painting. Since we are using only White candle and Black paint in this art, we have named it as Black Magic Painting.
- The first step is to draw any art that you would like to see.
- It could be snow covered mountains or snowfall in a winter season, X mas tree, or any character like Zebra or Panda which generally has black and white color combination.
- You can outline the character by first drawing it on a separate paper and then cutting the template.
- The template then can be placed on the white construction paper and the outline can be drawn with the candle or White Crayon.
- Once drawing is done with the candle, simply apply the coating of Black poster color or acrylic paint.
- For creating the below Eiffel Tower, I have first drawn it with the help of candle.
- The candle needs to be pressed firmly while creating the design.
- I have also added background of snow flakes, trees and bushes.
- Once done with drawing, I have then used ball of cotton dipped in Black paint to apply the coating.
- Magic Painting is now ready.

2. Painting With Balloons – Cactus Plant
Method: Have you ever thought how it would be to create painting using balloon? Kids love balloon not just for playing but even popping it. Balloon Painting Art is a fun activity. The kids would enjoy creating art work with the help of balloons. It is an easy and fun technique. It is also useful for gross motor skill and coordination. These activities enhance creativity in your child. Let us see the steps.
- Take a wide plate and pour color of your choice. Similarly pour another color which makes a good combination.
- Now take water balloons that are small in size.
- Blow them and dip the bottom of the balloon in the color plate, in both the colors.
- On the white construction paper, take the impression of the balloon. You can create art of your choice. For example you can make cater pillar, you can make flowers, any character, animal or bird.
- In the below Cactus art, I have used color combination of Green and Yellow.
- I have followed the above method and took the impression on the paper.
- Using Green marker, I have created the dots and with Red marker, I have created the flowers.
- The background is colored in Yellow with pencil color.

3. Painting With Strings – Flower Abstract
Materials required: Poster colors, Acrylic colors, white construction paper, and thick thread or string yarn.
Method: String Art is a fun activity. The kids would enjoy creating art work with the help of string. It is an easy technique. It is also useful for motor skill and cognitive development of the child.
- In a color palette, pour color of your choice.
- Fold the white construction paper into half and open it. You will see the center line.
- Take a thick thread of any length. It could be as long as 30 cm depending on the art that you want to create.
- Hold one end of the thread from your fingers, and dip the other end of the thread in the color palette.
- Use brush if required. Ensure that the thread is colored. Remove the thread.
- On the white construction paper, place the colored thread on one side of the page. The thread placed should be in a shape or design that would look like a flower, kite or anything that you would like to create.
- Close the page and hold it with your palm. Slowly pull the string.
- Your art is now ready.
- To create the below string art, I have used four strings with different color combination.
- I have exactly followed the above method and created flower abstract art.

4. Painting with Marbles - Butterflies
Materials required: Poster colors, Acrylic colors, white construction paper, baking tray, and marbles
Method:Painting with marbles is one crazy art. Kids love to play with marble. Please ensure that they don’t put it in their mouth. Close supervision is necessary. This technique enhances fine and gross motor skills.
- Take a baking tray or a box with an open cover. Place the white paper on it.
- In a bowl or a muffin tray, pour colors of your choice.
- Dip the marbles in the colors and put it in the baking tray or the box. And keep rolling it in different directions till the marbles create pattern.
- Keep repeating till the entire paper is marbled with different color combination.
- Marble art is now ready.
- The kids can use their imagination to use different color combination.
- The teacher can then cut the marbled paper into desired art object or character.
- For creating the below marbled butterflies, I have first cut different template of butterflies.
- Next step is I placed the template paper inside the baking tray and rolled the marbles dipped in colors.
- After getting the necessary pattern, I have applied glue on the base and stick it on a different white construction paper.
- To complete the art, I have outlined the butterflies with Red marker and gave a finishing touch by making flowers in the background.
- Marbled Butterflies are now ready. Don't they look pretty?

5. Q Tip or Cotton Swab Painting – Willow Tree
Materials required: Poster colors, Acrylic colors, white construction paper, and Q tip
Method:Cotton swab or Q tip is another substitute for young kids for their painting activity. The technique is very simple and yet exciting. These simple techniques boost the fine motor skills of your child.
- In a color palette, pour color of your choice.
- Dip the Q tip in the color and start creating your art on the white construction paper.
- For creating art with Q tip, you can first create an outline of any character of your choice. It could be a cartoon character, animal, bird or a flower.
- The kids can then paint the inside of the outlined character.
- Also, if there is no outline, a simple landscape can also be created.
- For creating the below Willow tree, I have first drawn the trunk and the branches of the tree.
- Then I have colored the background to create sunset effect.
- Using Q Tip I started creating the pattern of the leaves.
- At the bottom, I again used combined colors to make it look surreal.
- To complete the art, I have outlined the trunk and the rocks with a Black marker.
- And my Q Tip Painting Willow Tree is ready.
